Old Newberg Glass and Mirror Building

There is this one building in Newberg that I have always found intriguing but I’ve never learned what it is or what it used to be. If you’re from Newberg or have ever spent some time here, you may know the building I’m talking about, it’s the yellow and white-ish abandoned building on the corner of E 2nd St. and S College St. On the 2nd St. side you can see what remains of the sign from when it was home to Newberg Glass and Mirror.

Newberg Glass and Mirror is still in business though, and it has been since 1981. It has only relocated to 675 South Springbrook Road, where it sells commercial, residential and architectural glass.

I was drawn to this building, again, because I love how old it looks. The textures on it aren’t very common because it seems that most buildings age fairly well and when they get too old they are either refurbished or torn down. The windows are shattering and the walls are cracking, which makes for cool shots of how it’s aging. It also has yellow on the trim, which contrasts really well against the blue sky on a sunny day.
This building is an acquired taste though, because at first it does look really run-down, but try to look at it from an artistic point of view. Look at the textures and details, think about how you could paint or draw those. Look up at the roofline and see the lines that the gutter makes against the walls and the sky, it’s kind of pretty, right?
